Chicago Stars FC NWSL is making significant strides in its development by planning to build its first club-owned training facility on a 10-acre site in Bannockburn, Illinois. This initiative marks a crucial step under the ownership of Laura Ricketts to elevate the franchise's infrastructure to meet NWSL standards. Construction is expected to commence this spring and be completed by the end of 2027, with the club actively seeking a naming-rights sponsor for the facility. The design will be handled by the architecture firm Populous, while Marquee Development, owned by the Ricketts family, will serve as the development partner.
The new facility will feature two full-sized soccer pitches and a specialized pitch for goalkeepers, alongside a 45,000-square-foot indoor space that includes recovery and training areas, a weight room with outdoor access, and dedicated zones for mental wellness. Located approximately 18 miles northwest of Northwestern Medicine Field at Martin Stadium, where the Stars FC NWSL will play this upcoming season, the site is strategically chosen to support the club's long-term stadium plans.
Stars FC President Karen Leetzow emphasized the importance of this facility in not only meeting training needs but also providing flexibility as the club navigates its stadium situation. The ownership, which acquired the team in 2023 for around $35 million, is focused on improving both on-field performance and off-field attendance, which has been a challenge due to previous stadium locations.
Leetzow expressed optimism about the upcoming season, noting that ticket sales have already surpassed last year's totals. The move to Evanston for the 2026 season is expected to enhance fan engagement, with the new location being more accessible via public transit. The Chicago Stars FC NWSL is determined to turn around its fortunes and create a strong foundation for future success.
