Chicago Stars FC NWSL announced on Wednesday that they will not be pursuing Northwestern University's Ryan Field as a home venue for 2027 due to pushback from local residents and politicians. The club currently has a lease to play the entire 2026 NWSL season at Northwestern's Martin Field, which is located just a few minutes away. In their statement, the Stars emphasized their commitment to community engagement and the importance of dialogue regarding their presence in Evanston, Illinois. Ryan Field, which is set to open in October, was envisioned as a modern venue for the Stars, but concerns about the impact of professional sports on the community led to the decision to halt the application for a unique use permit. The Stars have been playing at SeatGeek Stadium in Bridgeview since the 2016 NWSL season, a location that has proven less accessible for fans. The club averaged fewer than 4,000 fans per game in 2025, highlighting the need for a more suitable venue. Recently, the Stars announced plans to construct their own training center in Bannockburn, Illinois, as they continue to explore long-term stadium solutions. Laura Ricketts, the majority owner of the Chicago NWSL franchise, acknowledged that finding the right stadium location is a significant challenge but also an opportunity for growth. The Stars are actively working on plans for 2027 and will provide updates as they progress.
