Chicago Stars FC NWSL forward Mallory Swanson made her long-awaited return to the pitch on Saturday.
What happened?
Swanson entered the match against the North Carolina Courage in the 76th minute, replacing teammate Ryan Gareis. The Olympic gold medalist's return was met with a loud ovation from the home side's fans.
Why it matters for Chicago Stars FC NWSL
The team has struggled mightily this season, sitting at the bottom of the standings with a 2-0-8 record. Swanson's return is expected to provide a much-needed spark.

What comes next?
Swanson's comeback had been over a year in the making. She missed the entire 2025 campaign due to maternity leave and was activated ahead of Saturday's match. The 28-year-old is one of 28 mothers playing in the NWSL this season.
Chicago Stars FC NWSL head coach Martin Sjögren said, 'Mal is Mal. Having her back is huge for us, but we also have to remember this was her first appearance after a very long time away.' Swanson's return comes on the heels of her friend and fellow 'Triple Espresso' member Sophia Wilson's own NWSL comeback on March 14. The Stars are hoping Swanson's return will help turn their season around. Swanson said, 'Everybody's body is different, and every pregnancy and postpartum journey is different too. The one thing I think everyone needs, no matter what, is support from the people around them.'
